Around and About

Porthallow Cove is a secluded coastal village with a sand and shingle dog friendly beach that is safe for swimming. Lunch and evening meals can be found at the historic Five Pilchards pub where fresh local produce is served daily. The village is flanked by two wooded valleys and enjoys a mild climate enabling a profusion of native and tropical plants to flourish. Being a haven for both wildlife and nature lover alike, it is possible to spot a range of animal and birdlife including whales, dolphins, owls, woodpeckers and birds of prey.

The mid-point of the southwest coastal path is at Porthallow where panoramic sea views across Falmouth Bay can be enjoyed. The mysterious, wooded riverside walks of Gillan Creek are only a 20 min walk from the village as is the coastguard lookout at Nare Point, a perfect viewpoint for the Big Ships and Funchai Race hosted by Falmouth. Boat hire and sailing tuition are also available at Sailaway at the nearby picturesque village of St Anthony. A short walk along the coastal path or a 5 min drive takes you to the Porthkerris Dive Centre, a launch pad for a host of professionally supported dives to the numerous wrecks as featured on BBC2's Coast.

Friendly pubs, shops and The Greenhouse, an excellent organic restaurant can be found in the nearby village of St Keverne which is also home to the award winning organic Roskillys farm with cafe/restaurant, gift shop and ice cream parlour where you can watch the ice cream being made or feed the ducks and donkeys.

Porthallow is the perfect base for experiencing both the desirable and popular Helford River area and the Lizard Peninsula. There are many subtropical and native gardens in the area including Trebah, Glendurgan and Trevarno. The Lizard Peninsula is an area of outstanding natural beauty and an area of special scientific interest. Several rare species of bird and plant life flourish here and there is a wealth of beautiful beaches and secluded coves awaiting the eager visitor including pretty Cadgwith with its thatched cottages and stunning Kynance Cove with eco cafe. The nearby Kennack Sands offers surf tuition and has boards for hire.  You can also find some of the best restaurants in Britain that utilise the fantastic quality ingredients produced here.
